What is CF?
  • Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-threatening recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children.
  • More than 1 million Australians are symptomless carriers of the cystic fibrosis gene.
  • A child is born with cystic fibrosis in Australia every four days.
  • There is no cure for cystic fibrosis, which primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.
  • A person with cystic fibrosis, even young children, have to take up to 40 tablets a day.
  • The average life expectancy for a child born with CF is 35 years.

By participating in Great Strides you will be helping to support people with cystic fibrosis across Australia.  Cystic Fibrosis state associations aim to:

  • Support individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families through provision of counselling, recreation, information and home support services;
  • Liase with schools, hospitals, health providers and community and government agencies on behalf of individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families;
  • Educate the wider community about cystic fibrosis through school visits, events, awareness campaigns and establishing partnerships with corporate and sporting bodies

Each state association also contributes money to the Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust to help continue vital research that could one day lead us to a cure for this debilitating condition.
